Parkwoods is southeast of the Don Valley Parkway & the 401, and west of Victoria Park Avenue, and north of Lawrence Avenue. This community overlooks the East Don River valley and is filled with parks and ravines with recreational pathways, and is quite quiet despite its proximity (and easy access) to major thoroughfares. First settled in 1833, and by 1841 the community had a church and also a cemetery, which is now a heritage site (SW of Victoria Park & Lawrence). The community was developed in the late 1950s and early 60s.
Motorists the Don Valley Parkway via Lawrence Avenue or York Mills Road, and access Highway 401 via Victoria Park Avenue. TTC riders have convenient bus service along Parkwoods Village Drive /York Mills Road connecting to the York Mills station on the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line, and the Lawrence Avenue connects east to the Lawrence East station on the Scarbrough Rapid Transit extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line. The north-south Victoria Park Avenue bus connects to the Victoria Park station on the Bloor-Danforth subway line.
The community is served by 7 elementary schools, 4 Catholic elementary chools, 1 public high school, and 2 public libraries. The York University Glendon campus is west on Lawrence Avenue E.
Parkwoods residents can shop at the area's many plazas and malls, along Victoria Park and along Lawrence. These include Parkway Mall (Victoria Park & Lawrence), Victoria Terrace (Lawrence & Victoria Park), and Donwood Plaza (Underhill Drive & Lawrence).
The community has many parks and playgrounds, but the showcase is Brookbanks Park, with a lush ravine valley and a wood chip nature trail following Deerlick creek. The community also has an ice arena, year-round tennis courts, outdoor basketball and 5 tennis courts, 4 baseball diamond, 3 running racks, an indoor and an outdoor pool.
Most of Parkwoods' hoes were built in the mid 1960s, and consist of 2-storey houses, split-level homes and ranch-style bungalows. There are also semi-detached starter homes (N of York Mills Rd) and a luxury condo building on Brookbanks Drive (overlooking the Deerlick Creek ravine. Those on tighter budgets can find rental and condominium townhouses south of York Mills Road. Homes in this community are in the low to medium price ranges.
