Homes: Newtonbrook Neighbourhood
Newtonbrook is located along the north boundary of the City of Toronto, nestled between the east and west branches of the Don River Valley, providing access to recreation and views of scenic ravines. The area was first settled in the early 1800s, clustered revolved around saw and grist mills that operated laong both branches of the Don River, and the local church was named for Reverend Robert Newton. In the 1840s the area attracted many Roman Catholics, typically of Irish descent. Newtonbrook was where former prime minister (and Nobel Peace Prize winner) Lester B. Pearson grew up. Newtonbrook was subdivided for major residential development in the 1950s, and is prized for its accessibility to the Yonge street corridor. Motorists can access the 401 via Dufferin, Bathurst, Yonge and Bayview, which also continue south into downtown. These routes also offer bus service (with Dufferin & Yong connecting to the Yong-University-Spadina subway line, and east west routes include Steeles, Finch, Cummer & Drewry. Schools The community has 5 elementary schools, 6 Catholic elementary schools, 2 Jewish elementary schools, and three public high schools. York University is easily accessible via Steeles Ave, and University of Toronto and Ryerson University are easily accessible via Yonge Street subway. 
ShoppingThe community has lots of shopping options, with lots of plazas along Yonge Street as well as the flagship CentrePoint Mall (Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue). Along Dufferin Street is a large discount warehouse district, while Steeles Avenue has a higher-end retail district with shopping plazas, "big box" chains, and smaller specialty shops. Recreation Newtonbrook is dotted with twenty neighbourhood parks and playgrounds, and has access to recreational pathways along both branches of the Done River, and ravine parkland along Newtonbrook Creek. The community has 4 indoor ice arenas, numerous tennis courts, baseball diamonds, sports fields, and two community centres. Esther Shiner stadium, west of Bathurst Street, sets 2,000 for sports and track & field. Homes Newtonbrook's has some pre-WWII homes dating back to the 1920s, but most of it was built in the 1960s and consists of split-level, 1-1/2 storey houses, and bungalows. Along Bayview, home buyers can find newer townhouses. Threr are a number of rental high rise apartments along Bathurst. Recently, some custom-built homes are being built, as well as newer luxury condominium apartment buildings, which are clustered along Steeles Avenue.
